The “‘Home for the Holidays’ Adoptathon” is a response to new data from Shelter Animals Count, which showed 96,000 dogs across the country were expected to be euthanized because they couldn’t find a forever home.
All the dogs available for free have stars on their photos on the MSPCA profile page.
Adoption fees for adult dogs usually range from $350 to $500.
Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell Director of Adoption Centers and Programs, said that shelters across the country have been seeing fewer dog adoptions for nearly a year because of a lack of space or high adoption fees.
Keiley added in a statement that the non-profit is doing all it can to help.
“We’ve been transporting hundreds of dogs here to Massachusetts where there are more adopters, and working with partner shelters to execute similar fee waived events to help attract more adopters to their shelters as well. It’s critical that we’re able to continue helping those shelters that are over capacity, but, in order to do that, we need to find homes for the dogs in our care.”
